Smoothie
Wild Tofu

Recently I have been making more smoothies to start the day, they make for great breakfasts and are a great way to use up fruit and vegetables you have lying around. Plus these are things that would normally cost you big bucks at the smoothie places in big cities…..

Good Morning Smoothie

This is a basic smoothie to ahve when you wake up for a nice mixed meal with a little added kick.

  • Handful of Frozen Berries
  • 1 Cup of plain Yoghurt
  • 1 tsp instant coffee
  • 1 Banana
  • Ice cubes
  • Dash of lemon juice

Also great for after workouts or when you need a quick breakfast and don’y have time to cook or prepare something else. The best thing about this one is that the instant coffee gives you  little boost while the yoghurt and banana will keep you filled up for a while.

Afternoon Summer Smoothie

For this one you will need 5 minutes prep but that’s alright as it is a smoothie for chilling. Basically you need to brew a bag of chamomile tea for 5-10 minutes before making it.

  • Chamomile tea infused water
  • 1 Orange
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 Cup of Yoghurt

Give it all a whizz together for a really refreshing smoothie that will chill you out, thanks to the Chamomile tea. Great for a hot summer afternoon after a workout or after doing some yard work and for kids after school.

Apple Cinnamon Smoothie

This is a great combo for a smoothie as it provides a good anti-oxidant boost and tastes lilke apple crumble.

  • 1 Large Apple
  • 1 Cup Plain Yoghurt or Coconut Milk
  • 1 TSP Cinnamon
  • 1 spoon of oats
  • 1 Handful of Frozen Berries
  • Dash of Lemon Juice

Again whizz it all up for an alternative to the first smoothie, great in the morning or after a workout. In fact great at anytime of the day.

Possible Tweaks

With all of these feel free to add your own creative imprint, but these have all been tried and tested to taste good. As for tweaks I do like to add a handful of frozen spinach to my smoothies as it doesn’t taste and gives them an extra nutrient kick. As for the lemon juice in all the recipes it is to help preserve them so if you are taking them on the road or saving some for later in the day the lemon will work to keep them fresh. Also if you are an athlete and want the extra protein throwing in an extra scoop of whey protein is a great idea.

The main reason I wrote this post though is not for the recipes as they don’t take a mastermind to figure out. Rather to get people into the swing of making smoothies this summer. They are a cheap and easy way to get down nutrition for even the fussiest of eaters.

When they really come into their own though is for kids who love smoothies and normally would not eat such healthy foods in abundance. All you need is a cheap hand blender and you are good to go. Plus if you have any fruit in the house which is going off just chop the pieces up and throw them in the freezer and use for future smoothies it is a good way to reduce food waste which is an ever increasing problem. So if you are rushed for meals or have kids then give smoothies a try they are easily assimilated and nutritious.

Yesterday I competed in the GPC Nationals powerlifting meet. It was a 15 hour day as I helped people in the morning and then lifted in the afternoon. I am a wreck right now as I hurt everywhere but it was fun.

I am 226lbs so I cut weight and made the 220lbs/100kg weight class. This was I was only competing against guys my size.

Here are my three squats of the meet. All my squats were “good lifts” according the judges. Personally I felt the 700lbs squat was high but I will take it.

Now here are my three bench attempts. The final two bench attempts were not passed by the judges. They said my butt lifted. I need to work on my technique to prevent this as I could have pressed a lot more weight.

Finally, here are my deadlift attempts. I make the first two easily then miss 600lbs because I can’t finish the lift. I just need to get stronger for this lift. I am going to make heavy bent over rows a priority going forward.

So that is it. After the meet I ate an entire pizza then passed out. Now I rest for a day or so and then get ready for a strongman contest at the Calgary Salsa Festival. Should be fun!

Yogurt

Hey guys, it is the day after I competed in the GPC Nationals Powerlifting Meet. It was a long, hard and fun day and I am a wreck now. The videos and meet thoughts will be posted soon, but for now I want to talk about one of my favourite foods, Yogurt.

On my honeymoon I spent a month in Greece with my wife. We stayed at smaller hotels and resorts that were privately owned, often by the people living in the home. Every day for breakfast there was yogurt among other things. Now I have eaten a lot yogurt in my day but nothing like this!

The yogurt there was so rich and creamy it was unreal! It was as if they took whipped cream and fermented it into yogurt. It tasted so good I didn’t need to sweeten it with fruit or anything. The other thing I noticed is that it kept me full much longer than regular “healthy” North American yogurt.

Obviously the reason for this yogurt being so good is that it is very high in fat compared to what I am used to. Also, there is no sugar or chemicals added which is also great. This higher fat, lower sugar version is what makes Greek yogurt so great. The insulin response is lower and the food is left in a more natural state. Don’t believe the low fat hype with yogurt. Most yogurt is skim milk (sugar water) which is then loaded with added sugar. This will make you fatter, not leaner!

Since coming back to the frigid north of Calgary, Canada, I have been looking for Greek Yogurt here. I have only found one product that feels and tastes like the real thing in Greece. It is called Liberte, Mediterranee. Make sure you check the nutritional profile! If the carbs are higher than the fat it is not the good stuff! You want the low carb, high fat, unflavoured yogurt. Then, add some fresh berries, not jam, to the yogurt for an awesome meal!

A close up of a woman's abdominals as she holds a dumbbell.

Hello everyone.  I’m on my fourth day of using Slendertone System-Abs so thought I would post a quick update on my initial thoughts and how I have found it so far.  Today I am going to describe setting up the belt for the first time, using the belt for the first time and how it felt after using it for the first time.

Setting Slendertone System-Abs Up for First Use

After I had unpacked the belt my first task was to charge the power unit for 2-3 hours.  Once the power unit was charged I then had to attach the pads that came with the belt.  This was done by removing them from their packaging and sticking them to the three metal studs which are positioned on the left, right and centre of the belt.  Once the pads were attached Slendertone System-Abs was ready for its first use.

The whole process of setting up the belt was quite different to what I imagined.  I thought once charged you would just strap the belt on and start using it.  I never imagined there would be pads involved.  However, it was still a relatively simple process and nothing I could not handle.

Using Slendertone System-Abs for the First Time

To begin using Slendertone System-Abs I wrapped it around my stomach making sure that the three pads were firmly stuck to the left, right and centre of my abdomen.  I was quite surprised just how sticky the pads were and it is quite an odd sensation to feel them on your stomach.  It is not odd in a bad way – just different.

The Slendertone 6 Week Plan recommends that you start on level 35 for your first use of the belt so I decided to go with that.  To get to level 35 I had to turn the belt’s power unit on and then cycle up through the levels until I reached number 35.  This was another strange sensation as I felt the impact of the belt getting stronger and stronger the higher the level went.  It is quite a difficult feeling to explain but I would probably liken it to really strong tickling.

Once I reached level 35 I then just left the belt to run its 20 minute course.  It took a few minutes to get used to the sensation as the belt gradually worked my stomach and then let it relax in a steady, continuous motion.

After the 20 minutes were done the power unit beeped and the belt shut down.  I then removed the belt, covered up the three sticky pads with the plastic sheets provided and put it away.

Feelings after Using Slendertone System-Abs for the First Time

After taking the belt off I was pleasantly surprised as my abs did feel like they had been given a mild workout.  The feeling was nowhere near as strong as doing a set of crunches, leg raises or planks but it is more than I expected.  The next day my abs felt slightly tenser too so the belt had definitely done something.

Summary

My main thought after using Slendertone System-Abs for the first time is just how odd the sensation is.  From the sticky pads to the actual “strong tickling” sensation of the belt it really is a strange experience.  I have never quite felt anything quite like it before.  However, I am sure I will get used to it over the next few uses.

The good thing is the belt appears to be doing something.  Whilst the physical appearance of my stomach has not changed yet it does feel ever so slightly tighter.  It is still early days but the first signs are positive.
