organic food- truth about health and the Food Standards Agency ReportSoil Association response to the Food Standards Agency’s Organic Review

I’m still at a loss at how the FSA reached their decision when you read their report carefully, despite the biased nature of the report, it still manages to identify major benefits of organic foods.

Obviously a major concern amongst consumers buying organic is to avoid xenoestrogens, toxins and other potential residue contaminants in conventional crops

The FoodStandard’s Agency study on Organic Foods admits

1. This review does not address contaminant content (such as herbicide, pesticide and fungicide residues) of organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs.

It is well proven that (most probably due to modern conventional farming and harvesting methods) average nutrient levels in food have reduced in recent years. It’s suspected that the McCance and Widdowson data that nutritionists use could be hopelessly out of date for use as a therapeutic tool. Despite this studies as early as 1958 have been used by the FSA in the meta study.

The FSA study on Organic Food admits

2. Based on 162 relevant articles published, in peer-reviewed journals since 1st January 1958

The FSA meta study did find differences in important nutrient values The FSA study on Organic Food admits

3. Significant differences in content between organically and conventionally produced crops were found in some minerals (nitrogen higher in conventional crops; magnesium and zinc higher in organic crops),phytochemicals (phenolic compounds and flavonoids higher in organic crops)

London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says “We have many clients in clinic displaying symptoms of magnesium deficiency and Zinc is very important for helping with infertility problems which are on the increase. It’s been shown anti oxidants such as flavonoids have an important role to play in protecting the body. It’s misleading for the FSA to suggest food with higher amounts of these nutrients is of ‘no importance’ for optimal health.”

In adition to disqualifying a major new EU study on organic foods the FSA also admits

4. Studies were also disqualified from inclusion if they were primarily concerned with non-nutrient contaminant content (cadmium, lead and mercury)

On those days when your nose is stuffed, you have a headache, and you just feel out of sorts, you may think you are coming down with the flu or a cold, but your symptoms do not go away.

Chances are you are experiencing some type of sinus inflammation or infection. Chronic sinus inflammation can be annoying and painful. Most often it is not bad enough to warrant a trip to the doctor, but it still needs treatment.

When the inflammation is severe you may be diagnosed with acute sinus inflammation or sinusitis. The treatment for that is antibiotics and feeling better in about 10 days.

When your infection is not acute, you need to become a detective and figure out the causes of your sinus problem and how you can treat it so you do feel better. Besides, inflammation is not good for you no matter the degree.

The responsibility of your sinuses is to make mucus which cleans and moisturizes your nasal passages. Trouble begins when those passages get blocked primarily due to sinus inflammation. That inflammation causes swelling, and the swelling narrows the passages for the mucus to drain. Once drainage is blocked, mucus builds and becomes a perfect place for bacteria to grow. Once there the bacteria may stick to the lining cells and cause a sinus infection.

Your body can usually fight off the virus that is triggering the sinus inflammation. However a secondary bacterial infection can also take place.

Acute sinusitis lasts less than 8 weeks and usually does not occur more than 3 times a year. Successful treatment counteracts damage done to the mucous lining of the sinuses and any surrounding tissue.

You can maintain good sinus hygiene by drinking plenty of fluids to keep nasal secretions thin. Also avoid air travel if possible. If not, then use a nasal decongestant spray before you leave to make sure you keep you sinus passages open. The use of saline nasal sprays, which are available at drugstores, also help keep the nasal passages moist which helps remove infectious agents. Inhaling steam from a bowl of boiling water or in a hot steamy shower may also help.

Sinusitis or sinus infections usually clear up when treated early and appropriately. However, people who have allergic or structural causes for their sinusitis may have recurring attacks of acute sinusitis or may develop chronic sinusitis. But that’s another post.

In the meantime, if you have allergies, you need to be more vigilant about checking for early symptoms. For the rest of us, be aware and get to your sinus problems early so you can treat them with the same remedies your mother used. They work and they are safe.

You should call a doctor when experiencing pain or pressure in the upper face together with nasal congestion or discharge, postnasal drip, or ongoing bad breath that is unrelated to dental issues.

I invite you to learn more about how you can maintain a healthy and active lifestyle and improve your emotional well being at http://www.antiagingsuccessguide.com Be productive regardless of your age and claim your Special Report about Challenging Your Brain.

There is some conflicting advice on a diet for person with diverticulitis. It could also depend on if you’ve been diagnosed with diverticula pouches,or just assuming that’s what you have.

If your doctor has checked and confirmed then you should definitly get on a correct diet for diverticulitis. The problem is just like with everything else in life, each individual is different. One persons diet will slightly differ from that of another’s.

Just like we don’t all eat the same kinds of food in life, naturally, diverticulitis foods to avoid will not all be the same in each case. The causes stem from our bad eating habits and the poor nutrition as well as toxins that result from them to begin with. If you haven’t already I guess its a good time to take an interest in health and nutrition.

Medications will always be only a temporary solution and certainly not the answer to prevention. would a good diet for person with diverticulitis consist of burgers, fries and a coke,or how about some fried chicken, and deep fried okra,or perhaps some barbeque pork loin steaks?

I think not, these are all foods that we thoroughly enjoy for the taste and fulfillment, but as you may or may not know there full of toxic rancid poisons, and provide very little if any nutritional value because of it.These would be the typical types of foods to avoid, but in the mean time find yourself a good diverticulitis diet to follow that has been proven to work for others as I did.

Some of us were just never taught conscientious nutritional eating habits growing up,and of course, the different reasons are many. There are several good diverticulitis diets available online and some even offer a money back guarantee!

What Should You Pay For a Properly Formulated SLS-Free Shampoo?

This topic has surfaced more than a half dozen times lately – which brings me to flag it AND to write a POST. After just passing 1000 members in our little HAIR CARE FORUM/GROUP, I guess I will never again run out of subjects to write about. “Sulfate-Free Shampoo” continues to be the number 1 subject queried about on the KillerStrands site, which continues to puzzle me, as soon as I feel like I have written about every single angle there is on the subject, I can now see what writers must battle with who write for newspapers/magazines when they have one subject people want to keep hearing about…..no matter how much is written (and they are talented writers).

Many of you have been on the trail of the “PERFECT” Sulfate- Free Shampoo and although I am

not one that juggles 01-73979715 shampoos around any longer ( I find a great one, buy the king size version– which knocks the cost wwwwway down & I’m set for the year) I can understand how many of you do…. I used to. It wasn’t until I learned cosmetic chemistry that I learned to settle down with 1 great shampoo. Maybe you will one day as well. DA21266

What seems to be a constant sentiment is the disappointment in L’Oreals newest entry into the SLS-Free world, EVERPURE. I have heard disappointing comments across the board, sometimes I wonder if there are happy consumers of it and they just don’t write in. I mean it truly amazes me that I never hear any compliments about L’Oreal Hair products of any kind. They are a HUGE conglomerate……..Huge….they have to be huge for some reason. But I will be perfectly honest here as I always am. . . . L’Oreal is on the bottom rung as long as I can remember as far as the quality of their products, so I would stay away from them, until they do some re-formulating . . . which can very easily be done. wwwaaaaaa

Continually the disappointing news comes from Sulfate-Free Shampoo’s purchased in Drug Stores, Grocery stores and Discount stores I’m sorry to say. I would say about 50% of you are OK with the ORGANIX line http://www.organixhair.com/. So if you absolutely insist you can only spend $6.00 on your shampoo, to date, I would say that is your brand.a0178-000028

Here is my issue . . . for years I would battle my clients in “my chair”. . . yes, even a portion of Malibu clients had this thing for not wanting to spend much on a shampoo (not all – ‘some’- I need to be careful to say)… It “was” and “IS” a puzzle to me, so the fact that I continue to hear this from Killer Strand readers, reminds me of back-in-the-day. My hesitation at believing people can’t afford a shampoo that costs anymore than $6.00 is based on my experiences with all of my clients throughout the years, many of whom were wealthy beyond all of us.

There is some sort of weird stigma – though — at least 50% of Americans think that shampoo should be the cost of a bar of soap, because basically that is all it does, is clean the hair. Soap is cheap, why not shampoo . . . was the sentiment I would hear most often. Shampoo is completely different than soap, although to be perfectly honest I feel the SLS-based soaps should not be used on the body - IN ANY WAY - and I use SLS-FREE Soaps that I find on ETSY.com. All hand made - Cold process Soaps - which means I think it takes 4-6 weeks for the soap to be fully processed. They are wonderful and so gentle on the skin.

I would always end up asking how much they spend on their face, both in skin and face products, in make-up and make-up supplies. The numbers were always – very VERY high… I would ask why they weren’t willing to take care of their hair nearly as well as their face . . .which would always reveal a puzzled look on faces of all types and ages, with most claiming to never have thought about it that way. Because when asked which was more important their hair or their skin – people have a very hard time choosing one over the other. Both are JUST as Important, which leads me to believe that spending the same amount on both should be the norm, well, it wasn’t.

What I can share with you is the fact that I get

200254248-001

almost - ZERO complaints on any of the Sulfate-free shampoos that sell for $15.00 and up. When a Shampoo is formulated correctly, which means using multiple surfactants ( the cleansing agent), not one – the product then requires you to use ‘HALF” as much of the amount of shampoo PER Wash….what does that mean? 1 bottle will last twice as long. So if you are getting twice the use out of 1 bottle of shampoo – the price therefore is definitely going down – way – way down. Maybe that’s not the best marketing strategy, but with a little research and a little experimentation you can find this out for yourself — OR……trust me & believe in my facts. Its very hard to –re-train consumers…. once you have been used to using a certain amount of shampoo . . . you keep reaching for that same amount.

BUT…..BUT, I am hoping many of you will listen and learn this time out.

Try it, put a tiny cup ( glad to enclose with purchase of shampoo from http://killerstrands.myshopify.com/collections/sulfate-free-shampoos - just ask) in your Shower – pour the shampoo in the cup to assure yourself you are only using the tiniest of amounts. I am fairly certain the reason for the dislike of the inexpensive Sulfate-free shampoos stems from not using multiple surfactants and not using better ones. I fully understand keeping ‘costs’ down, but what good is any product if people don’t like it and won’t buy it ?

I will bet as soon as P&G steps into the sulfate-free shampoo arena you will find your first “best of ‘ALL’ worlds” product. They are pretty smart with their hair empire….and won’t want it tarnished with the release of a premature sulfate-free shampoo dud….I just cannot see that happening. The requirements as I understand them from all of you are this:

You want a Sulfate-Free Shampoo that:

  • has Lots of bubbles
  • cleans hair sufficiently
  • is a reasonable price
  • you can find easy enough

Is there anything I am missing? From emails I have received, and I promise you I receive a ca-zillion, these are your requirements.

While you wait for that perfect inexpensive SLS-Free Shampoo, please give one of ours a shot. What I am going to offer you my readers a shot at this weekend only – July 30 thru August 2 – which you will only be given if you are reading this is: FREE SHIPPING AND 20% OFF ALL KillerStrands SHAMPOOS, place the order- put the code word “WomanInTheMirror” in the box at the end of the checkout process http://killerstrands.myshopify.com/collections/sulfate-free-shampoos . This can be a huge savings to you available this weekend only July 30 thru August 2, 2009 – so here is your chance to try any of the more expensive shampoos with excellent properties I am fairly certain you will find are exactly the same as the shampoos WITH sulfates. A shampoo does not need to create such horrible problems and I have proven over and over that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is the stem of those problems in people of all ages, races and sex’s. If you haven’t quit yet . . . please quit today.

There are people’s hair dying all over the world and we need to make it a better place. Make a change. Please, I’m giving you a great deal on getting started

Less common cosmetic procedures are generally over-hyped and over-analyzed by the public. According to a new survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, about 1.6% of respondents said that they had a less common cosmetic procedure.
Yet procedures such as bicep or tricep implants, calf implants, buttock implants, lip implants, penile enlargement and vaginal rejuvenation have a certain stigma surrounding them and in turn are often called “fringe” procedures by the media.

The Academy receives many calls on the topic of less common cosmetic procedures from the media. Everything from a voice lift (cleverly named “Throatox”) to a Botox® Breast Lift, it seems the crazier the topic, the more attention it receives. The fact of the matter is that these procedures are not commonly performed and there is a reason for that. They are less common because the risks for complications are high and there is little or no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness.

For more information on less common (a.k.a. fringe) procedures, please visit www.cosmeticsurgery.org.

Brittle diabetes is known as labile diabetes or unstable diabetes. Persons with this diabetes type have rapid swings in their blood sugars from the extreme highs to the extreme lows. It is very complicated for a doctor to treat, and most people that have brittle diabetes see an endocrinologist. This is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of complex diabetes problems along with other endocrine disorders.

Why do some type 1 diabetics have brittle diabetes? Let’s take a look now at some of these reasons why this might happen.

1. The person with type 1 diabetes may have some thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism. Hypothtyroidism is an underactive thyroid that can cause other problems, interfering with stable blood sugar control. Thyroid medications can be given to correct the underlying medical problem.

2. Addison Disease is an adrenal problem that is sometimes common in type 1 diabetics. There are drugs that help the adrenal glands to work better, and this may solve the problem with rapid glucose swings.

3. Delayed stomach emptying, (gastroparesis) is a common problem that causes brittle diabetes. Since the stomach doesn’t digest and empty food properly, this causes a great instability in blood sugar numbers. Doctors can give medications that will help the stomach to digest foods better such as Compazine or other such drugs that work on the stomach digestion.

4. People that are under more stress than normal and also living with type 1 diabetes may experience erratic blood sugar control day and night. It is important to eliminate all stresses possible and a doctor may give tranquilizers and anti-depressants in order to stabilize the diabetic person’s mental health so that the blood sugar does not have huge swings.

People that have labile diabetes are those in the age group between 15-35. This is the category of where it seems to happen most, although that doesn’t mean people younger or older can’t experience the same problem.

Now as far as treating the brittle diabetes situation is concerned, there are sometimes points where hospitalization is required in order to get on the right diabetes management program. The learning of an insulin pump is many times the best solution for a person in this situation having brittle diabetes. The pump also saves time with giving multiple injections daily. I have had friends that after being placed on a pump due to their erratic blood sugar control, and once on a pump, they have stabilized and done very nicely.

If the underlying problem for the brittle diabetes is due mostly to mental health factors, there are support groups, counseling to work out the problems, and as I mentioned earlier, tranquilizers and anti-depressants to help.

People that have a tendency toward brittle diabetes without an exact known cause should always wear a medic-alert bracelet, and carry glucose tabs if they start feeling low along with glucagon. These people should monitor more than the normal 4-5 times a day. Most doctors suggest up to 10 times a day and then once or twice during at night. Doctors might even suggest a continuous glucose monitor which is even better if a person is totally unstable for reasons not mentioned here. In fact, sometimes, it is just the body chemistry for reasons doctor’s cannot figure out, and remains a mystery.

If you’ve read my other article concerning resveratrol you know that I explained that current research is investigating whether resveratrol can in fact help prevent cancer, or stall its growth. Presently there is much research being done to analyze if resveratrol is able to do this, and if so what is it’s method of action.

One study pointed out that it can stop the multistep carcinogenesis, tumor initiation, promotion and progression. They speculate that resveratrol acts as a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger to halt tumor creation. Basically ROS are ions, so they are missing one electron and this causes them to become very volatile and can damage cells. What resveratrol does is scavenge them to stop them from causing damage to your body. (1)

They also found that resveratrol was an inhibitor of iNOS and Cox-2, both of which have many cellular functions however it was noted in the article that excessive expression of these could lead to the pathogenesis of many diseases such as carcinogenesis. Additionally, they state that iNOS and Cox-2 are the main features of the inflammatory response which can cause repair and carcinogenesis as well. This is obviously beneficial due to the fact that the inhibition of these two proteins can help prevent carcinogenesis. (1)

The same study noted that other studies as well found resveratrol to act as a cancer chemopreventive and a chemotherapeutic agent in humans. For example it has been found too cause apoptotic cell death in leukemia cells and breast cancer cells. (1)

Overall, it seems that resveratrol seems to be incredibly beneficial as a supplement; however I think the research is still too early to take it to prevent or cure cancer.
