Maintaining an ideal weight prevent you from a number of diseases and keep you both physically and mentally fit and active. A right selection of foods plays a key role in maintaining your optimum health. This article gives you a brief list of healthy foods that will help you to maintain an ideal weight.

You must eat a high fiber diet. It is an effective prescription for so many remedies ranging from simple constipation to major diseases like coronary heart disease, chronic constipation, colorectal cancer, hiatus hernia, gall and kidney stones, high cholesterol levels, all diseases related to high cholesterol levels and diabetes mellitus. Dietary fiber is that part of plant food which transverses the small intestine and is not digested by endogenous secretions.

One of fiber’s most important functions is to absorb water in the intestine to form a gel. It helps rapid passage of bowel contents. High carbohydrate high fiber diet causes slow release of sugar (carbohydrate) into the system and helps effective control of diabetic state. The fiber also helps in absorption, re-absorption, and metabolism of bile acids and cholesterol which are implicated in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease and gall stones.

The high sources of fiber food come from minimally processed cereals like wheat, rice, maize, ragi, etc.; legumes like beans, millets; root vegetables like carrots, turnips, leafy vegetables and fruits. Useful suggestions of a healthy diet include:

• Cereals should be processed as minimal as possible.
• Avoid sifting rice, wheat, ragi or maize flour while preparing dishes out of them.
• Pulses can be cooked with the skin
• Have vegetable fiber food with each meal
• Certain fruits can be eaten with peel, like apple, mango, etc.
• Drink minimum two glasses of water with each fiber meal and in total about eight glasses per day.

Dark circles under the eyes occur as we get older but you can prevent them. They are the result of the thin layers of skin there stretching. As you age your body produces less collagen. That combined with the fact that the layers of skin in this area of the face are much thinner than the others means this is one of the first places you will experience signs of aging.

They can be quite noticeable too which takes away from the beauty of the rest of your face. When other people look at you that may be one of the first things that their own eyes settle one. However, you can take steps to help reduce the problem so that you aren’t allowing the aging process to get one over on you. Even if the problem is genetic in nature you can take steps to slow down the aging process and even to reverse it.

Signs of Aging around the Eyes

It isn’t just dark circles under the eyes that you have to worry about though but they are one of the most common. Many people assume that they are the result of not resting enough or not sleeping soundly. As a person gets older taking care of children and having a career often cut into adequate sleep time so this is an assumption that does make sense.

However, the real problem is that the proteins in the thin layers of skin found there have started to break down. This is why you may also start to develop crow’s feet which are around the eyes. The introduction of these fine lines can soon lead to you to having a face that looks much older than you are happy with. The way to reduce the problem is to find yourself a good quality eye cream. There are many products on the market but not all of them work well so take your time to find one that does.

Athena 7 Minute Lift Versus Aminogenesis

These 2 creams work in 2 ways so it’s good to understand how these 2 creams works so you can pick which is best for you. Athena 7 Minute Lift cream works by hydration and lifts the skin as well. This happens in minutes and so is a fast acting cream or so called ‘face lift’ cream. Aminogenesis by Treptinon on the other hand uses coenzyme Q10, ceramide 2 and amino acids to stimulate collagen production and antioxidants to protect against free radicals so takes longer to work. They are both popular and therefore it just depends on which mechanism you prefer.

Tips to find a Good Quality Eye Cream

To find a good quality eye cream you want to look at what the product contains. Look for those with all natural ingredients in them including Retinol A. You want to take the time to find out what the different ingredients in them are. For example both Collagen and Elastin are ingredients very good for your skin. Others though aren’t so you need to learn the difference between them.

The highest price eye cream out there doesn’t necessarily work better than others so keep that in mind as well. Base your purchase decision on those that have been proven to work through clinica studies and through the reviews you find online from those that have used them. It is also a good idea to invest in those that offer you a money back guarantee. That way if you aren’t happy with the eye cream you can at least get a refund. So whichever cream you choose, just monitor the results and see which provides better effectiveness.

With more and more of us rushing around and being distracted throughout the day with jobs, errands and the general pressures of today’s society we are putting less attention in what and how we eat. This is something I am sure we are all guilty of, do you remember the last time you had a meal on your own without reading something while eating or watching TV in between bites or even engulfing in chatter with a friend or colleague? Its a rare occurrence that’s for sure…..

There is nothing wrong with the occasional mindless meal but I feel we need to be able to enjoy our food more without distractions, enjoy the process of cooking, laying the table and serving the food, exploring flavors and savoring every bite. After all the gift of taste is something amazing and our lives would be bland without it.

Spend More on Food Less on Health Care - Imagine this; In 1960 the average american spent 17.6 percent of their income on food and just 5 percent on healthcare. Recently though those numbers have had a reversal spending on food has dropped to just 10 percent and healthcare has more than tripled to 16 percent. That’s a pretty extraordinary statistic, do you not think spending a little more on quality meat, fruit and vegetables would help get these figures back to a healthy level?

Re-Script Your Dinner - Next time you eat with family try these tips: firstly try to be the last person on the table to start eating. Next pace yourself with the slowest eater. Avoid the subconscious need for ‘one more helping’. You will find that by following these tips you will be forced to savour each bite and taste each flavor, you may even find you eat less than you think you need….

Stop Meal Multitasking - Anything that distracts you from focusing on what we are eating makes us likely to overeat unnecessarily. Did you know 91 percent of people claim to regularly eat while watching TV and 35 percent regularly eat at their desk while working. Try for one meal a day to sit down without distractions and focus on your food. The flavors, textures and variety should all be savored. At first it will feel weird as we are pre-programmed to be distracted while eating but the long term benefits will be amazing, resulting in improved digestion as well as general enjoyment of food increasing….

Pay Attention to Food - Ever been to a cocktail party where the guests are mindlessly attacking the snacks? Throwing handful upon handful of nuts and cheese down while sipping on champagne. I have been guilty of this and still am if not careful, the reason is that when we have any level of anxiety food and the process of eating can act as a powerful calming tool. Anyhow use these events as a reminder to pay attention to the food you eat rather than snacking while sipping on a drink and talking to someone. Whatever you do deserves your full attention. If we learn to become aware of each thing we do and do one thing at a time it will multiply enjoyment.

Remove Food from Sight - We tend to eat more than anything if its on view all the time, the simple sight of food stimulates hunger. One tip I find helpful is to keep food you don’t want to binge on out of sight instead keep healthy fresh food at your desk or counter top. A good tip is to keep only a bowl of fresh fruit and a jar of raw nuts on your counter top. This will encourage healthy snacking for yourself and those around you.

Eat Salad First - Each night at dinner I start the meal with a large salad. I really make a meal of it so to speak adding everything from avocado, onions, carrots, cucumber, nuts and seeds making it a really tasty start to the meal. It was originally an idea I came up with when reading how god it is for digestion to start meals with some raw food. Not only did it improve my digestion but it made me enjoy the whole process of eating more, I now savour the salad and tend to eat less of the heavy stuff just eating a small piece of meat with some cooked vegetables after (always size according to appetite). Its definitely something to try, make a mega salad and savour it before your main course. I am sure your general eating experience will improve.

Don’t Eat From a Bag - Eating from a bag is dangerous for two reasons; Firstly their is no way to gauge how much your eating and its easy to overeat when eating anything from a bag. The other and main reason is that bagged foods are normally hazardous to your health as they tend to be processed junk like chips and sugary snacks. Steer clear of bagged food when you can, your body will thank you…

Eating wisely can also save the planet. Nearly 20 percent of the nations energy is spent growing and delivering food to the average american who consumes 2,200 pounds of food a year amounting to nearly 3,500 calories a day! How can we help? well its pretty simple; either go one day a week without meat or dairy or just eat less for one day a week. A great opportunity to practice Intermittent Fasting and save the planet!

My last couple of articles have looked at protein and the health benefits it can provide.  Although it is a fantastic macronutrient that acts as the building blocks for your body, protein is is not without its faults.  Consuming too much protein can cause a number of health problems.  In this article I will be discussing some of the potential problems associated with overdosing on protein in greater detail.

1) IT CAN CAUSE DEHYDRATION:- According to this study increasing your protein intake can also increase levels of dehydration.  The study looked at five endurance athletes who consumed low, moderate and high levels of protein over a period of four weeks.  The findings revealed that as protein intake went up, hydration levels went down.  Dehydration can put you at risk for a number of health problems and heat related illnesses.

2) IT CAN INCREASE FAT STORAGE:- One of the common misconceptions surrounding protein is that you can eat as much as you like and you will not get fat.  However, the simple truth is that if you eat too many calories (whether they be carbohydrate calories, protein calories or fat calories) any excess will be stored as body fat.  Increasing your protein intake and reducing your carbohydrate intake whilst staying within the limits of your daily metabolism can stimulate fat burning in your body.  However, increasing your overall caloric intake by eating more protein will ultimately lead to fat storage.

3) IT CAN CAUSE DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS:- Eating high levels of protein and low levels of carbohydrates causes your body to enter a state of ketosis.  This is a state where there is no glucose available in your blood in your blood to use for energy.  Since there is no glucose available your liver starts to convert body fat into fatty acids and ketones which can then be used for energy.  Whilst this is a popular fat loss method it can also be dangerous for diabetic people.  Ketones are acidic and can therefore cause a  number of problems including nausea, vomiting and even death.  In non-diabetic people blood ketone levels are controlled by insulin.  However, diabetic people struggle to produce adequate levels of insulin and ketosis can quickly turn into ketoacidosis, a state where the level of ketones in your blood is extremely high.  This then leads to the problems discussed above.

4) IT CAN LEAD TO KIDNEY STONES:- Studies suggest that high protein diets (particularly those high in meat protein) may be partially to blame for kidney stones.  The reason for this is that when you consume protein it is broken down into acids including uric acid.  This then increases the overall acidity of your blood.  Your responds by releasing the alkaline substance calcium phosphate from the bones into the bloodstream.  Ultimately, this can then lead to an increase in urine levels of both uric acid and calcium.  These substances may then form into insoluble crystals (kidney stones) which are excreted in the urine.

5) IT CAN CAUSE OSTEOPOROSIS:- As I mentioned above eating high levels of protein can ultimately cause your body to release calcium phosphate from the bones.  A lack of calcium in the bones can then lead to a condition called osteoporosis where your bone density becomes reduced.  Osteoporosis causes your bones to bend, break and fracture much more easily than someone without the condition.

As you can see from this article protein is not perfect.  Consuming too much can cause serious health problems.  Although it is a vital macronutrient which helps keep you alive excess protein consumption is not advised.  Increasing your protein intake at a sensible rate should not cause any of the problems listed above and may help you build muscle and burn fat.  Just ensure that you do not go overboard.

Now I want to hear your thoughts. Are there any other protein disadvantages that you can think of which cause health problems?  Do you agree that protein consumption should be moderated to a degree?  Let me know by leaving a comment.

Here’s hoping this Guide will help you with the over 700 different shampoo’s on shelves in the USA.

889939-001 83077419

Here are Killer Strands Top 10 Tips for finding an awesome shampoo for those of you who color your hair……………

10.) The color of the bottle matters…..( checking to make sure you are paying attention - j/k)

9.) Take into account the texture of your hair…fine, coars0002haire & normal are words used for texture plus: straight, wavy, curlie. Those words will be listed on a great bottle of shampoo . Each one of those factors affects how well the hair will hold hair color in the hair strands. Therefore should coincide with hair color retention.

8.) On the Ingredient list on the back of the bottle, be sure the surfactants (cleaning agent in shampoo’s) are one of the following (copy-paste-slip in your wallet), these will take it easy on your color and leave your strands vivid:

  • Caprylyl Capryl Glucoside ………..(super natural)
  • Disodium Soyamphodiacetate
  • Sodium Coco-Sulfate
  • Sodium Methyl Oleoyl Taurate
  • Sodium Coco-Sulfate
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine
  • Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate
  • Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate ……….one of my fav’s
  • Ammonium Cocoyl Isethionate
  • Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate
  • Lauryl Glucoside
  • Decyl glucoside
  • Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate

wwwwaaa2

Of course you are not expected to remember these, but become accustomed to the words of the good ones, so you are not only told the “bad” ones….I wanted to show you a partial list of surfactants that could replace SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE or ALS….very healthily. There are plenty to choose from . . . .

7.) Star200470127-001t with a company that cares about its customers and doesn’t seem to be only about sales, marketing and selling, I realize that is hard to distinguish between. . . but a little bit of research will usually reveal what you need to know about this topic, remember how important your hair is to you. If all else fails. . . go by my recommendations, I do a lot of research, test lots of brands and listen to a LOT of people.

Style:

6.) Read the labels of ALL shampoo purchases, I know many of you have learned to read the labels of food you eat . . . most of you care about your hair just as much as your body . . . give it the same respect, by learning the ingredients that are safe and sane for it.

5.) These ingredients should NOT be in the ingredient list:

  • sodium lauryl sulfate - sls
  • ammonium lauryl sulfate - als
  • sodium laureth sulfate - sles

(or anything close to these - I’ve noticed some companies spelling them incorrectly - to sneak through online searches I imagine).

hair994

4.) Pay attention to whether your hair is dry, oily or normal - - - probably the most common label you’ll find on the bottle. Pick out the shampoo that matches your hairs moisture level - which should help retain your hair color using the appropriate shampoo for the hair type.

3.) If you wouldn’t buy your apples, oranges and bananas at your Beauty Supply, then don’t buy your shampoo at your grocery store - please. You will be purchasing a higher grade more appropriate for color treated hair purchased from Killer Strands, a high end Beauty Supply or a Salon.scentbar2

2.) Seeing the words “For Color Treated Hair” mean nothing - I’m afraid. After combing the aisles of the local drug store, I’ve discovered with the popularity of wanting shampoos for “Color TREATED” Hair, ever other shampoo has those words printed on the bottle - Anyone can put them on any bottle with anything inside it.

00000345

1.) Do not believe the words “NATURAL” or “ORGANIC” printed on the bottle , remember we have absolutely no restrictions, of “words” printed on products. They literally could put the words “battery acid” in the bottle and say it was “natural”. I truly don’t think you should believe anything printed on any bottle of shampoo. The only thing you should look at from a bottle of shampoo in the drug store is the ingredient list.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There actually are a set of laws on what manufacturers of hair products are supposed to follow, but the laws address the “INGREDIENTS ” label on the back, not what they print on the front. Therefore I highly recommend to all of you to only look on the Ingredients list. Let’s review one bottle as if you were in a Salon OR Beauty supply
Below is a close-up of a couple bottles from the line that my clients like the most, John Masters Organics or JMO. The reason they claim to like it? How gentle it is, how Blondes remain the proper tone all the way to their next appointment, how vivid the reds remained, I got pretty much all the compliments on the shampoo a Colorist is looking for..
Look at the front of both bottles ! !
What do you notice about this shampoo?
( this shampoo is usually put in the “higher-mid” range class of shampoos - $15.95/bottle > which is inexpensive here in LA).
The front of the bottles mention absolutely nothing about being “Color-safe” or “Sulfate-Free ” . . or any 0005 MASTERS-POOS  ZINC & SAGEof it. . . they are just quiet stated- simple -classy . not words and false claims plastered everywhere.
The information you need is in the “INGREDIENT LIST “, so you would flip the bottle
JMO shampoos9
I want to teach you a little bit about LABELING . . . .
labeling on shampoos, hair conditioners, & styling products. I am by no means an expert, so this will be a “little bit”…but I think will be enough to help you with upcoming purchases, if you are so inclined.
Luckily for all of us . . . the FDA is receiving a lot of heat from consumer groups as far as ” SAFETY IN LABELING”. . . they have already completed a giant overhaul in Europe . . .hopefully we will do something similar here in the USA.
Here are the ingredients in the JMO - Evening -Primrose Shampoo and remember the manner in which they are listed….is the strength in which it is in the bottle. Meaning, see the Aloe Vera Juice??? It is listed first. . .(if you are following the rules of Labeling correctly) that means there is more Aloe Vera Juice than water in this formula. Which is a wonderful and amazing feat, I actually used this combo on my Carbon Beach Creme, so I happen to know that this IS possible and works into a wonderful -”end” result.
On most SHOWER-based hair products you will find “water” as the number 1 ingredient, especially Shampoos. Aloe Vera juice, is exactly as it sounds…aloe vera itself. Which is a very jelly-like-thick substance that is truly nature’s “healer”. As a former Stunt woman one of my specialties was “fire”….after a few mishaps with burns, I discovered Pure Aloe VERA the first time I got my skin burned ….it was not horrific, but if you’ve ever had a small burn, think of that magnified 50 times ! Its not a pretty situation and after going to one of the top “burn” centers in the country…I was introduced to the ALOE VERA plant … they had aloe vera plants growing all along the window sill on one of the floors, where the nurses were.
After I had recovered from a small burn, the nurses had me pick a few leaves ( yes, at a medical center) I applied the juice from the leaves. . .with cool compresses (after 14 days of more radical treatments) - they were miracles workers. Since then I have ALWAYS had an Aloe plant on my window sill, used them to raise 2 kids - - NOTHING HEALS the way pure ALOE VERA does.
I just can’t imagine the wonderful tricks it performs on hair and scalp, come to think of it . . .maybe that’s why people say their hair-fall completely stops ? ! ? ? ???
It does help cells rejuvenate which is what you look for in hair loss formula’s……?? I think I just hit on something new I need to start testing for 10,000 HEADS - Yeehaw !
* NOP Certified Organic…………….It is also CERTIFIED Organic, not an easy certification to obtain, especially when you consider how many real/natural Fruit Oils and extracts this shampoo contains.
I did not use the “INCI” names on the ingredient names for you, the REAL English names were used for you so you would KNOW what most of them are… the big corporate manufacturers want to be able to use the technical or Latin names for the ingredient names, so the consumer cannot figure out what anything is. What do you think of the list, in plain English? ? ?
I would imagine it would make you want to read them more often….wouldn’t it? Look at the ingredients in this shampoo? This is andre shampoo { I never really sat down and looked at this list, now that I have…I’m impressed! ! Really impressed!}
Generally speaking, when you are diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you will sit down and meet with a nutritionist or dietitian to help you deal effectively with this chronic, sometimes challenging condition. The biggest and most commonly asked question that nutritionists hear from the newly-diagnosed is, “What are the foods to avoid for diabetics?”
For the most part, most nutrition experts and health care professionals will tell you that it is not so much about what you can and can’t eat, but rather how to make sensible choices and eat a balanced diet. Sugar, obviously, raises your blood sugar level, which you are trying very hard to control, but that does not really mean that chocolate cake or orange juice is necessarily “bad.” The same holds true for pasta and rice, which are actually carbohydrates; the body does energize carbs as sugar, but again, spaghetti is not inherently evil.
So what do you need to do with regard to food choices for diabetics? You need to choose wisely, my child, choose wisely. That means eating a variety of nutritious foods every day, at every meal, and restrict those that will likely cause your sugar to spike.
That being said, there are some foods to avoid for diabetics. What are the foods to avoid for diabetics? You would be better off if you avoided anything that is processed. Examples of such foods are breads, pastas, sugary cereals (whole grain cereals are fine), cakes, cookies, processed soups, packaged food bars, rice, refined sugar, pasta, instant mashed potatoes, frozen meals, frozen French fries, pastries, bagels, sausage, bacon, and the like.
One way of looking at it is this: if it didn’t grow in the ground that way or come from an animal that way, it is best to limit it. Processed foods are the foods to avoid for diabetics.
Mesothelioma Symptoms
icon1 admin | icon2 Health | icon4 06 25th, 2009| icon3No Comments »
Since mesothelioma is such a rare form of cancer, many people who develop mesothelioma symptoms have never even heard of this disease and are unaware of its symptoms.
Most of the body’s internal organs are covered with a protective sac called the mesothelium. Mesothelioma cancer occurs when malignant or cancerous cells appear in the mesothelium. The lungs, heart, and abdominal organs are the most commonly affected organs. Of these, the lung lining (plueral mesothelioma) is most typically infected.
Exposure to asbestos is almost always the cause of mesothelioma. Prior to 1975, asbestos was one of the materials commonly used in the manufacture of building materials. In most cases, symptoms of mesothelioma do not appear for 20 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos.
According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, malignant mesothelioma caused 2,704 deaths during 2005. So, even though asbestos has been used sparsely since 1975, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that deaths caused by mesothelioma will peak during 2010.
Until it reaches advanced stages, this form of cancer provides very few obvious symptoms. It remains dormant for years; however, when it becomes active it quickly attacks the mesothelium and becomes almost impossible to treat successfully. The CDC estimates that 75% of the people who discover symptoms will die within one year of being diagnosed with this cancer. The remainder will die 6 months to several years later.
Plueral mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining) represents approximately 3 out of 4 of the cases diagnosed. Typical symptoms of this type of mesothelioma include shortness of breath and or/chronic coughing. Of course, since these symptoms are similar to those of allergies or the common cold, it does not occur to most people that they are infected with this type of cancer.
Peritoneal mesothelioma (cancer of the stomach and intestines) also exhibits symptoms that are not obviously recognizable as cancer, such as anemia and fever.
It is important to understand that mesothelioma generally takes decades to develop, but once mesothelioma symptoms are discovered (properly diagnosed) it quickly becomes aggressive. The best course of action is to become aware of the symptoms and to immediately seek diagnosis and treatment.
